David Kessel is a daily practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga and is part of the Ashtanga community at the Contemplative Sciences Center, where he practices and teaches.
He is authorized (Level 2) to teach by Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois, lineage holder and director of the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India. David makes regular trips to Mysore to study yoga, Sanskrit, and philosophy.
David’s other outlets and modes of practice include woodworking, which he currently does full-time, and a background in writing, editing, translation, and journalism. He grew up in Queens, New York, studied English and Russian at Williams College, lived in Vladivostok, Russia on a Fulbright grant, and received a Masters from the Columbia University Journalism School.
David is inspired by the sparks of simple beauty. He is drawn to the potential for craft in big and small things, and he tries to pour love and care into everything he does. He relishes the precise gestures of making coffee and tea, tying good knots, and folding things. Yoga and contemplation have been essential to his ongoing project of becoming a more actualized human-creature.
