This course provides an introduction to mindfulness practices to facilitate coping with stress and greater engagement with life. Mindfulness involves bringing intentional non-judgmental awareness to what is happening in the present moment. Based on the popular Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, this course is highly experiential and uses a lab or seminar-like format designed for college students to explore applications of mindfulness in mind-body awareness, mindful eating, communication skills and stress management.
Instructor Sam Green, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the School of Nursing. He has been practicing mindfulness for 20 years, beginning with the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class and continuing with a number of other courses and retreats, including the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Professional Training program with Jon Kabat-Zinn. He has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes, and other classes through the Center. He has also introduced mindfulness practice to medical students informally for many years, and teaches an introductory mindfulness course for undergraduates at the University.
