4-Week Intro to Ashtanga Yoga

4-Week Intro to Ashtanga Yoga

Sat. Jun 2, 2018 - Sun. Jun 24, 2018 (4 weeks)
Every Sunday, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:50 AM

This course is designed for beginners—those with no yoga experience at all or those who have some yoga experience. Participants will be guided in a small, intimate setting, allowing for individual attention.
*Registration is limited to 10 participants.
“Ashtanga” means “8-limbed method,” which includes a number of mind-body elements that are within our control and can contribute to greater health and wellbeing. Attendees will be introduced to these dimensions, especially through an introduction to postures; breathing and concentrations practices; and deep relaxation. The class will build upon the practice progressively each week. By the end of the four weeks participants will have a firm foundation on which to continue their yoga practice at UVA Ashtanga Yoga or even one's own.
$20 for IM-Rec members for the full 4 weeks; $40 for non-members
Details on how to pay are to come.
* Come to all sessions and receive a free month of Mysore (pass)

Saturday | 9 - 9:50 AM |AFC| Taught by Spiros Simotas, Ashtanga Assistant.
Posture instruction only. Each Saturday class will begin with a foundational practice of Ashtanga yoga. We will cover the sun salutations, standing poses, some of the seated poses, and the closing sequence.
Sunday | 9 - 9:50 AM |AFC| Taught by John Bultman
Each Sunday will include Yoga theory and principles, a Mysore primer, and review of the posture instruction learned on Saturday (9-9:50am). Participants will be guided at a slow and even pace through the postures that were learned in previous classes. This class provides a great opportunity to review and apply what was taught on Saturday and will include a brief intro into Yoga Philosophy.

Benefits of Ashtanga practice may include improved strength, stamina and flexibility, improved breathing and breath control, heightened ability to focus, and increased memory.

* There are no prerequisites for this class in regards to age or physical condition. However, if you have any questions about whether or not you can attend this introductory course, please consult with your doctor.
